NANO-CATHEDRAL

Project Summary

The project NANO-CATHEDRAL aims at consolidation and protection of deteriorated stones in profane and ecclestical monuments and buildings, such as cathedrals  by developing new materials, technologies and procedures. Particular emphasis is placed on the preservation of the originality of materials and on the development of  tailor-made solutions to respond to the specific problems related to various lithotypes. Indeed, the objective of the project is to present “key tools” by means of innovative nano-structured conservation materials. NANO-CATHEDRAL strives for restoration and conservation on a full European scale and research work will be carried out with lithotypes representative of different European geographical areas, styles, climate and environmental conditions. Five different cathedrals were selected because of different exposure conditions and different types of stones: the Cathedral of Pisa in central Italy, the Cathedral de Santa María of Vitoria-Gasteiz in Spain, the Sint-Baafs Cathedral of Ghent, in Belgium, the Cathedral of St. Peter and Mary in Cologne, Germany and the St. Stephen’s Cathedral, in Wien, Austria. In addition, the Oslo Opera House with its white Carrara marble is considered as a contemporary building for the research of the project.
