VOLATILE

Project Summary

Volatile - Biowaste derived volatile fatty acid platform for biopolymers, bioactive compounds and chemical building blocks - aims to develop an innovative Volatile Fatty Acids Platform for the bioconversion of municipal solid bio-waste fraction and sludgy biowaste from other industries. These platform will be incorporated into anaerobic digestion facilities.  By using a complex membrane technology, the volatile fatty acids will be recovered. They will serve as a carbon source/substrate for further value added processes, such as bacterial fermentation achieving the biopolymer PHA to be verified in material applications, yeast cultivation for single cell oils as precursors for oleochemical industry, as well as long chain unsaturated health-promoting omega-3 fatty acids from heterotrophic microalgae for food ingredient or nutraceutical purposes. In addition, the process development will be analysed by comprehensive LCA studies, investigations on legal and market environments, and agent-based modelling towards accomplishing sustainable processes and value chains.
